Things to Do in Holmes Beach

Dining and Shopping

The main grocery store on Anna Maria Island is Publix and it’s in Holmes Beach.  If you want to avoid the crowds, avoid Saturday and Sunday shopping when many vacation rentals turn over.   If you must go on the weekend, early morning before 8 a.m. is best or after 8 p.m.   The CVS Pharmacy is next door to Publix.  Holmes Beach is filled with mom and pop style restaurants and stores.  For coffee and tea we recommend the Island Coffee Haus at 5350 Gulf Drive.  They have excellent baked goods and free Wi Fi too! If you’re looking for pizza, you must try Solo’s.  It’s in the Anna Maria Island Shops on 3244 E. Bay Drive.  Ask for the BLT pizza.  It’s just like it sounds, crispy bacon, fresh lettuce and tomato on pizza drizzled with an amazing sauce.

You won’t find movie theaters or bowling alleys in Holmes Beach.  Life here is more about live music and you’ll find it just about everywhere from the Ugly Grouper on Marina Drive, to the Beach Cafe, to a Drum Circle on the beach, also at the public beach at 5:30 p.m. on Fridays.

Parks and Recreation

In Holmes Beach there are plenty of things to do.  Enjoy free parking at the Manatee public beach.  It located at the end of Manatee Ave at 4000 Gulf Drive.  There are concessions,  showers to rinse the sand off, changing rooms, a cafe and bar, public restrooms, picnic areas and lifeguards on duty.  Tip to remember, no alcohol on the beach.  It can bring a $500 fine which is a really expensive drink!

Enjoy a walk through the Grassy Point Preserve, it’s 34 acres of wetlands, upland and mangroves.   The preserve entrance is at the end of Avenue E and has a shell parking lot, picnic tables and shade trees. There is also a kayak launch for access into the bay. The preserve is open to the public from 7 am to dusk.  To get there, from Walgreens on E. Bay Drive, go south and turn left on 30th St and then left on Avenue C to the end.
